Displaying Chinese characters on the screen of a computer requires that this one is configured to display the extreme orient languages. The best solution consists in settling the Windows multilanguage support on the computer. Normally this one is already settled with Windows Vista. It can possibly not be with Windows XP. If the Windows multilanguage support is not present, the Windows CD (or DVD) is necessary to install it. You can follow the explanations given in the tutorial 9.2 (How to display Chinese characters in a HTML page) to install the Windows multilanguage support with the Windows CD.
If you do not have the Windows CD (if you have bought your computer without the Windows CD for example), you can only and simply install a Chinese characters font in the directory C:/Windows/Fonts. This solution is very easy but will be however insufficient to display all the Chinese characters. Indeed, regrettably certain Chinese characters can possibly not be taken in account by the font which you will have installed... In that case a web page which will contain these characters will not display them correctly...
We are going to proceed in the following order:
1 - Verify if the computer displays Chinese characters;
2 - Download and install a Chinese characters font;
3 - Consult web pages containing Chinese characters;
4 - Copy Chinese characters in the memo pad.
To verify if your computer displays Chinese characters, a simple method consists in connecting you, via internet, on a chinese site. You can use one of the following addresses for example:
http://www.google.cn/
http://www.beijing.cn/
http://www.shanghai.gov.cn/
http://6.cn/
If you obtain the following displays, it means that your computer is not configured to display the extreme orient languages.
Indeed, the Chinese ideograms are not displayed, but on their place we find little white squares or special characters. Naturally you can see some Chinese characters, when these are integrated into images, but the others characters are not displayed.
In the Google search engine, type "Chinese characters fonts ". Numerous sites will suggest you downloading Chinese characters fonts. For example connect you on the site http://www.freelang.net/fonts/. Then download the MingLiU font for example.
Once the file "ttf_chinois_mingliu.zip" is downloaded, extract the file "mingliu.ttf" and to install it in the C:/Windows/Fonts directory.
In the date of writing these lines, the following links allow to download the Chinese font "fireflysung.ttf". This font seems to contain practically all Chinese characters.
- google motor search : wikipedia multilingual support (east asian)
- http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Help:Multilingual_support_(East_Asian)
- http://www.loqu8.com/products/download-newsung.htm
You can also download and install this font in C:/Windows/Fonts.
Verify that chinese characters are now well shown in web pages.
Display with "mingliu.ttf" only. Some characters (see green arrow) are not displayed.
Display with "mingliu.ttf" and "fireflysung.ttf" installed . All characters are displayed.
Now you will copy and save, in a text document, Chinese texts contained in web pages. Open the web page http://www.beijing.cn/ for example. Select some Chinese characters and copy them in the clipboard (Edit/copy or Ctrl-C).
Open the memo pad and copy the contents of the clipboard (Edit/Paste or Ctrl-V). The copied Chinese characters are then correctly displayed in the memo pad, on condition naturally to choose font MingLiu. Otherwise you will have only small white squares.
To be able to correctly save Chinese characters in the document, you necessarily have to choose the unicode format.
